Intellectual vs Physical Distribution

Paul Zane Pilzer coined the term “intellectual distribution”. Intellectual distribution is educating customers about products products and services that they didn’t know existed. It  means the major focus is on you getting the word out about a product or service not on you physically delivering a product to a customer. The product ordering system, product fulfillment and physical delivery is handled by the manufacturer and a courier company. You simply get paid for referring the customer to the manufacturer.

You can get paid to spread the message in person or over the internet. If you’ve got a hot new product, you simply tell as many people as you can about the benefits of the product. You then can either order it for the person or they can order it directly from a website.

You can still be a small business owner without the trucks, and  sophisticated ordering and fulfillment systems and you can get paid. With this system, you can be anywhere as long as you have access to a computer and the internet. What’s really great about this system is that there are lots of opportunities to do this with companies already set up and you simply plug in. Of course, you have to do your due diligence here because there a few get rich quick schemes you should avoid. There are also some really good opportunities that I discuss on my website. It’s a very simple and affordable small business model that has all the benefits of traditional business without some of the major headaches that overhead brings.

Small Business Margins or Profitability

In all the excitement and hard work that goes into setting up a conventional small business gross overall margins need to be thrashed out. In other words, what kind of profits will you make? It is a crucial step that must be taken early in the and form the central backbone of any business plan. What is your margin? What  can the industry bear? Is the end price realistic? Will it sell? How many units will sell?  The answers to these questions are not easy but you MUST come up with an answer before you go down the road and find out that there’s no money or not enough money in the business. You could end up with a low paying job that you created with all kinds of long term commitments like leases that need to be paid so you are trapped into a downward spiral. Having a your own small business is great as long as you are making lots of money.(profits) If you are not going to make lots of money, stick with your job. Not every small business lends itself to being a home based business but when it’s possible, especially at the beginning, the advantages cannot be ignored.

First, you don’t have to make an immediate decision as to where you might want to locate your business. This hunting for space job alone can take months and money you may not want to spend.

Second, in a home office, you don’t have to lay out precious cash for space you may not really need for months or even years.

Third, you don’t have to sign a lease which keeps your options open and obviously reduces long term commitments. Keeping as many options open is a very wise strategy in any new venture.

Fourth, there could be important tax considerations. In my town, home based businesses are not subject to municipal business taxes including school taxes. That’s a big deal.

Fifth. Since you are using part of your home to run a business, you may be able to deduct part of your mortgage, municipal taxes, heat and electricity costs.

Sixth. No commuting. Save gas and maybe the cost of a second automobile.
